BSOはユネスコと国際学術連合会議(ICSU)が提唱する世界科学情報システム構想(World Science Information System or UNISIST programme)に基づき,国際ドキュメンテーション連盟(FID)を舞台に1970年代後半に開発された新しい一般分類表で,異なる索引言語間(分類表,件名標目表,シソーラスなど)の変換言語の役割をになう。 本書は英国BSO委員会のメンバーである著者が,内外の潜在的利用者にむけてBSOの全般について明快に記した英文図書である。
BSO, first published in 1978, was constructed at FID in association with UNESCO in the framework of the UNISIST programme (World Science Information System). It was intended as a switching mechanism for various indexing languages. As an ordering system BSO has inherited some of the traditions of library classification, but it also incorporates many features drawn from post-1945 classification theory which have not previously found expression together in completed general classification schemes. Being a broad ordering system, BSO was expected to serve other purposes besides the original switching role. The book gives a comprehensive, exact and intelligible description of BSO.
